Fort Lauderdale has more waterfront linear footage than almost any city in Florida, and that geography shows up in the doors. When a house sits on a finger canal, the rear slider faces water permanently, gets no rain shelter, and collects salt from both the Intracoastal and the ocean breeze behind it.
The Las Olas Isles and Rio Vista neighborhoods have a lot of homes from the 1950s through the 1970s, many of them with original or first-generation aluminum sliders. Those doors are genuinely worth saving. The frames are heavy extruded aluminum that has outlasted several rounds of hardware, and the panel proportions are part of the character of the house. What they need is carriages, track surfaces, and locks, not replacement.
The second cluster is newer construction west toward Plantation, Weston, and Pembroke Pines. Different problem entirely. These are larger multi-panel doors, often three or four panels, sometimes pocketing into the wall. More panels means more carriages, and a single failed roller in the middle of a four-panel run makes the whole assembly feel broken.
